Welcome to West Street School

Native American Projects

Students in the fourth grade have been studying Native Americans from different parts of the country. Students conducted research to find facts about the location, shelter, clothing, food and contributions of the tribe. The students displayed what they have learned in posters and 3-dimensional projects.

Mrs Murray's and Mrs Lanctot's Classes

Student’s in Mrs Lanctot and Mrs Murray's classes worked together to create Native American dwellings. Students and teachers went outside to collect the materials, along with sketching out their ideas and working as a group to figure out what they would look like!

Veteran's Day

On Thursday November 10th Mr. Veshia’s class held a ceremony observing Veteran’s Day. The students wore red, white and blue and recited patriotic poems and songs honoring America’s Veterans.  A brief discussion was held concerning the meaning of Veteran’s Day based on essays the class had written about this special holiday.

Thank you Veterans!

Hispanic Heritage Day at WSS

On Friday October 14th students at West Street School and members of the community, celebrated Hispanic Heritage Day.

Items from many Hispanic countries including Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Cuba, Colombia, Venezuela, El Salvador, Honduras, Peru, and others were displayed and enjoyed by the students as they listened to Spanish music and were able to play some of the musical instruments which often accompany Spanish music. Thanks to Margaret Morrissey, Director of Jacob Edwards Library and her staff, displays of Spanish books, flags, movies and magazines were also available.  Antonio Fonseca, a local Puerto Rican artist, created the flag decorated signs identifying the objects from the many countries represented.

There were displays of vegetables and fruits used in Hispanic homes.  Parents, staff, and students cooked and enjoyed food from their native countries such as Spanish rice, beans, nachos and salsa, salads, desserts, pork and chicken.
